Exercise Challenge Week 1 in Review
Sorry for the late review, this have been a little off but they are getting back on track.
Looks like we lost a few people during the first week. Hopefully they will check in this week. I haven't figured out how to transfer the video from my camcorder to teh computer yet so I really hope my descriptions of the exercises from dance class make sense.
Keep moving and getting those cardio minutes! :) Don't forget to check in this Friday for week 2. The weeks run from Saturday to Friday. Keep up the great work everyone! (click on image to enlarge)

I'm in NY right now and the time difference is really throwing me off. The Challenge beginnings tomorrow and I hope you're ready. I will be starting a couple days late because of travel but I'm all over this one. Something about legs and arms that seems easy to me. Although I still need to do something with my soft center.
Time to start the day!

Challenges for June - Upper & Lower body!
For June's Challenge we are focusing on Upper and Lower body. You may choose to do one or both parts for this month's challenge. It is completely up to you. Since Summer is just around the corner I know that everyone is wanting to firm up both areas.
Please continue to do your regular work out routine but try to incorporate the following into your week as well.
The rules: (in addition to the general rules)
1. Minimum of 400 minutes of cardio for the month. Strength training is in addition to that.
2. You must attempt to do the following upper and or lower exercises 3 days a week
Lower Body: 3 sets of 10-20 of each depending upon your level
- Genie Sit
- Lying Adduction (inner thigh)
- Lying Abduction (outer thigh)
- Easel stance toe squats (we do these as a warm up in one of my dance classes. Start with your feet fourth position but with your toes facing forward so that you are in an easel position. Rise up so that you are balanced on your toes, be sure that you are in a tucked position meaning that your butt is not sticking out and your back is straight. Be sure that your shoulders are back and down. Now slowly lower down, keeping your knees bent, to a count of 3 and rise back up to a count of 3. Be sure to remain tucked the entire time to protect your lower back.) Be sure to switch legs and do equal number of sets on each side. (video demo to come next week)
- Lying Leg Curls
- Coach Nicole's Butt-Blasting Workout
Upper Body: 3 sets of 10-20 of each depending upon your level
- Forward Arm Raise
- Shoulder/Tricep burner aka "shoulder buddy." Another killer from dance class, you may want to do this in front of a mirror.
First stand with your arms at your sides, chest up and shoulders down, back and relaxed, then leading with your elbows raise your arms so that your elbows are in line with your shoulders but your forearms are still hanging down, parallel to your body and your palms are facing back. Be sure that you keep your shoulders relaxed and down the entire time. Hold this for about 15-30 seconds making sure that your elbows and shoulders stay aligned. Once you have the right form slowly raise your forearms while still keeping your elbows up so your forearm is slightly bent and lower and your palm is facing down. Be sure that your elbow does not dropped below your shoulder and that you keep your shoulders down the entire time. This definitely requires some coordination and body awareness. Hold this position for 1 minute at a time working up to 3-5 minutes at a time. Do at least 5 "sets" of this one. You really do want to "feel the burn." Be sure to do this in front of a mirror or window so that you can be sure that your elbows and shoulders stay in line otherwise you won't feel the benefits. (video demo to come next week)
I've been doing this for over 5 years and believe me, it never stops burning :).
- Biceps Curl
- Triceps Curl or (seated version)
- Boxer
If you have other upper and or lower body favorites that require little or no equipment please share them with us. I personally love doing The Bar Method Body - Designer Sculpting DVD which works both arms and legs in 45 minutes. It is low impact ST but an amazing "dancer's workout."
3. Set a personal goal and post it in your blog and in the June Goals Post.
4. You must check in by commenting in the weekly check-in post which will be on Friday's.
I think that's it! Everyone should be added to the sidebar, but if I missed you please let me know. Be sure to check the Rules and FAQs if you have any questions. Now let's get our butts in gear and get rid of inches!!!!!!!!
